A Beginners Guide to Mixing Finishes

It’s often thought that fixtures, fittings and finishes have to match in order to create a fashionable interior for your home. However, in many cases, the right combination of different finishes can turn a boring room into an elegant, stylish space in the blink of an eye.

It’s Good to be Different
While uniformity can bring order and a certain tranquil style to a room, when everything matches your home can stop feeling like a place of personal relaxation and develop a regimented, army-like feel. Including different finishes can have the same effect as using different colours in a room, brightening up the atmosphere and giving an original vibe.

Don’t Overdo It
The old saying says that ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ – and this also rings true for your interior. An overly-erratic design scheme can be chaotic and look disordered, leaving your guests confused and overwhelmed by the amount of different things going on at once. A general rule is stick to between 2 & 4 different finishes in any one room.

Be Daring
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and go for an outlandish combination – making a bold statement is a fantastic way to create your own personal, unique look for your home. Mixing opposites is perfect – high shine finishes, such as polished nickel or chrome combines fantastically with low shine metals, like oil rubbed bronze or brass.

Don’t Just Mix Metals
You can mix more than just metals, as colours and textures can  be mixed stylishly and effectively – matte and gloss textures, particularly of the same colour, work excellently. Try combining one of our glass wardrobes with a bedside cabinet or chest in the same colour but with a matte finish. Gloss finishes on wardrobes are ideal for creating a colour pop against a matte wall of the same colour.

Use our interactive wardrobe builder to mix as many or as little finishes as you want, creating a bespoke, unique fitted wardrobe for your home.
