DIY Winter Wonderland Decorations for your Home

Are you planning a festive and decorative Christmas? There’s no better way to bring some cosy, seasonal joy into your home than with DIY Christmas decorations.

Discover some of our favourite winter wonderland decorations that you can make at home to welcome in the most wonderful time of the year!

Homemade wall décor

A fantastic way to make your home feel Christmassy is with colourful wall decorations.

Get creative with a pair of scissors and some pure white card to create a string of paper snowflakes to hang in your hallway, or twist some gold and silver tinsel along your banister.

If you’re skilled at crafts, you might want to try creating your own festive wreath for your wall or front door using pinecones, red poinsettias dried oranges, cinnamon sticks and evergreen foliage. Not only will this look amazing when hung up, the oranges and cinnamon will create a delicious Christmassy scent.

Perhaps you could take some branches from your Christmas tree (if you have a real one!) Alternatively, you could source some from effective fake branches from your local crafts shop.

For a more traditional look, try hanging some mistletoe tied with a subtle ribbon above your doors and mirrors. This the perfect way to inject that festive feel into your home without causing the space to feel cluttered.

DIY tree ornaments

Adding some homemade ornaments to your Christmas tree will help create that winter wonderland feel in your home.

In addition to your regular baubles, you could try adding some traditional Christmas sweets and crackers to your tree – these come with the added bonus that they can be used on the big day and therefore you have far less décor to store away until next year!

Electronic candle lights are another great way to add some interest to your tree, as well as some sprigs of red berries. You could also create your own paper ornaments by cutting Christmassy shapes out of strong white card – snowflakes would work well here, as well as tiny trees and stars of all shapes and sizes.

If you have little ones, get them involved with creating the paper decorations – whether they’re old enough to cut their own shapes out or able to help decorate the shapes with glitter and ribbon afterwards. You’re sure to end up with some unique DIY Christmas decorations.

Switching out tired, old tinsel for lengths of white ribbon and opting for bright, white lights will help create that winter wonderland feel. If you’re thinking of buying a new tree this year, why not opt for a fake one with frosted tips? Fake trees are more environmentally friendly and shed less – plus, those frosted edges will help you feel as though you really are walking through a winter wonderland!

Christmas colours and lighting

Whether you prefer subtle, colour-coordinated Christmas interiors, or you’re partial to eclectic, red-green-and-gold vibrancy, getting your colour scheme right is the key to transforming your home with DIY Christmas décor.

Green, red, gold and silver are classic Christmas colours, so try adding these colours to areas in your home. Create the perfect winter wonderland Christmas decorations with multi-coloured paper cutouts of stars, trees and Santa hats.

For an extra feeling of warmth and cosiness, hang strings of fairy lights around your home and turn off or dim your main lights. Looping these lights over doorways, furniture and more can create the perfect cosy atmosphere for your Christmas Dinner or for watching Christmas movies with loved ones.

You can even get creative with shapes and patterns, arranging longer strings of fairy lights into the shape of a reindeer, present or even Santa himself! Smaller strings of lights can also be used to spell out a festive phrase, such as ‘Ho, ho, ho!’ or ‘Deck the halls.’

Unique decoration ideas

If you’re a baker at heart, try making some miniature gingerbread houses as the perfect (edible!) DIY Christmas decorations. Why not place the houses together and add some tiny fairy lights to create a cute, festive scene in your kitchen or living room? Just be warned, if your houses are as delicious as the ones we made, this particular decoration won’t last long!

No space for a full-size tree? Don’t panic! You can get mini versions of fake Christmas trees that will fit into a smaller space or even on a tabletop. If you can’t find a tree that fits with your aesthetic, try filling a glass bowl with some brightly coloured baubles and adding an artfully arranged string of fairy lights for an instant festive lift.

One area we’ve noticed people tend to neglect when it comes to Christmas décor is the wardrobe. But this is where you keep all your brilliant festive outfits for the season – it might even be where you store your Christmas décor throughout the year!

Why should we miss our wardrobes out when decorating for Christmas? Try hanging paper decorations or fairy lights around the frame of your wardrobe. Attach some of your paper snowflakes or stars to the doors of your wardrobe or, if you have glass sliding doors – try placing some battery powered lights inside your wardrobe, letting their twinkle shine through the glass for a Christmassy feel.

Organise the interior of your wardrobe, making sure that your Christmas jumpers, scarves and more are front and centre for the festive season. This means that whenever you open up your wardrobe, you’ll be greeted with some festive joy!
